 Saharanpur: Assistant Director Fisheries Dr. Mukta Singh said that in order to protect the pond and fishes from damage during the rainy season, fish farmers should be alert so that the fishes do not suffer due to sudden change in the quality of water. The amount of water naturally increases during the rainy season and that is why it is very important to drain the water.  For this they can increase the depth of the pond.  If the depth of the pond increases, then its capacity to hold water also increases.

 She said, "The Dames around the pond and the drainage area of ​​the pond should be kept secure by putting a net so that there is no danger of fishes coming out with excess water.  In most cases, dams are eroded by excessive rainfall.  Due to which the pond gets damaged.  That's why it is also very important to repair the dams just before the rainy season.  Also, fish farmers should keep in mind that over time, organic matter accumulates at the bottom of the pond.  If this silt reacts with excess water, it can hinder the condition of the water.  That's why it is very important to remove silt before the onset of monsoon."

She added, " During the rainy season fish come to the surface of the water for oxygen.  This is due to the lack of dissolved oxygen in the water.  To increase the supply of oxygen in the water, add fresh water to the pond or use an aerator and medicines like oxygen tablets can also be used in prescribed quantity. Along with oxygen, it is very important to take care of the pH as the pH level drops during monsoon and as a result, the surface water becomes more acidic in nature.  Maintaining the optimum amount of water is very important. Outlet structures can help in maintaining the optimum amount of water in the pond during the rainy season.  It may also allow complete draining of the pond.  Pond outlets maintain optimum water levels by preventing pond water from reaching the outside and can also limit rainwater runoff."

" Pond outlets can be made using a variety of materials such as fishbowl, concrete, wood and cement.  Use the right feed along with proper pond management to ensure healthy fish growth.  Apart from this, keep the environment of the pond clean and friendly.  For more fish production in the pond, store fish seed of disease free and best quality. By having the receipt of fish seed from the fisheries department, fish seed of the best quality can be obtained from the corporation's hatchery and stored.", She informed.
